In January 2014 I decided to take a (short) break from working as a freelance stylist in Amsterdam and went to the Indonesian island, Bali. There I did volunteer work, taught at a school for children with mental disabilities in Ubud, and helped BAWA, a local dog rescue organisation.. Then I met Janet Nicol and 3 months turned into 2 years.
Janet was running "Inspired Bali", an independent magazine that instantly caught my eye because it was offering a unique view of the diverse tropical island. Inspired Bali formed the bridge between the western expatriate community and the local culture and traditions. Working from co-working space Hubud, a whole new dimension of freelance work was presented to me. At that time I was craving creative work, and when she had seen my enthusiasm, Janet offered for me to work on the magazine together.
At Inspired Bali I stood by Janet to make creative decisions and supervised all aspects of the magazine's production including art direction, journalism, production coordination, digital marketing & sales.
I also created an "advertorial" photoshoot, something that was unique in Bali at that time. I approached different brands that produced goods or were selling them on the island. They got a chance to present themselves, in a unique and culturally diverse way, in a photoshoot styled by me and shot by photographer Heather Bonker
